India’s National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 has emerged as Gold Standard for transforming Indian higher education. First time in the history Indian education, large number suggestions across the sector of the society are incorporated in the NEP 2020 which ultimately earned the reputations from every Indian as “MYNEP.”
The rich heritage of ancient Indian Knowledge has been a guiding light for the NEP 2020. The focus of NEP is to building character and enable learner to be creator of wealth (an entrepreneur/employee). The central principle of education has shifted from stakeholders alone to people and planet. Global citizenship and global corporate responsibilities are integral part of NEP. The key features include the holistic and multidisciplinary education with Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) scheme that paves the ways for multiple entry and exit options for students. It also provides maximum flexibility to students when it comes to choose of subjects as well as the prescribed trajectory while studying at HEIs.
The three types of institutions, as per NEP, are Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities (MERU), Comprehensive Teaching Universities and Degree Granting Colleges. The affiliated colleges have to transform themselves into any one of the above types by 2035. As a part of internationalisation, top 100 universities from abroad may set up campuses in India and equal number of Indian universities may set up campuses abroad.
In NEP, the key attention also has been paid towards the light & tight regulation, academic leadership, governance and autonomy to build world class quality education. To achieve the benchmark, Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) -an Umbrella Body, which will have 4 verticals for its various roles- Regulation, Accreditation, Standard setting and Funding
The National Research Foundation (NRF) will act as magnet to strengthen the research ecosystem in the country and build an “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” and also take our R&D innovative products to Global under the “Local-Vocal and Global” vision of our Hon’ble PM of India, Shri Narendra Modi ji.
As India moves towards becoming a developed country and among the three largest economies in the world, the NEP 2020 prepares learners as wealth creators or change masters to lead the unknown roles in unborn companies. Thus, NEP act as powerful tool for India to transform higher education and make India a global leader in education sector.
