Pandemic mediated by the coronavirus outbreak has impacted the education system drastically as it left more than 1.3 billion learners across the globe out of their learning institutions, stuck at home. Online learning, which came as a compulsion for the students and their teachers, has now become a preference over traditional brick and mortar learning for most.
E-learning is often used as an umbrella term for ‘Distance learning’ or ‘Online learning’ that doesn’t involve a traditional classroom as it takes place over the Internet. In the time of crisis, online learning has bolstered education for learners across the world.
A classroom learning pattern in the traditional education system has been the primary source of education for students, but when it comes to higher education, students have always adopted a mix of traditional and online learning. Attending physical classes is still the most dominant form of pursuing education as it allows students to interact with teachers and fellow students face-to-face.
Despite the discipline, social interaction & the environment offered by traditional classroom based learning; many students are transitioning to online or distance learning which gives them the flexibility to learn at their own pace and time while exploring other opportunities.
Research suggests that online learning has been shown to increase retention of information, and takes less time, meaning the changes coronavirus have caused might be here to stay. I strongly believe that the move to online learning can prove to be a catalyst for building a new and effective method of educating students.
